FAQS

Answers to commonly-asked questions

Who is this service for?

This service is for anyone with questions about their breast cancer risk, screening results, or a symptom they’re worried about. Whether you’re in your 20s, 30s, or beyond, we’re here to help you get answers.

What kinds of questions can I ask?

Anything. We’re here for all breast health concerns—risk assessment, screening follow-ups, dense breast questions, genetic risk, symptoms like lumps or pain, or just needing help interpreting a confusing report.

Do I need to have symptoms or abnormal results to use this service?

Not at all. Many of our patients just want to understand their personal risk or get guidance on what screening they should consider—especially if they’re younger or have a family history of breast cancer.

Can I use this service even if I’m not at “screening age” yet?

Yes. Screening guidelines don’t fit everyone. If you're under 40 but have risk factors or concerns, we’ll help you understand what’s right for you.

Do I need a referral?

No referral is needed. You can book directly with our doctors.

How soon can I be seen?

We offer same-day or next-day virtual appointments. No waiting weeks just to get started.

Where does Defiant offer its services?

Defiant currently offers services in Massachusetts, with other locations coming soon.

What is the difference between the “Know your risk” and “Elevated Risk” services?

“Know your risk” is for people who aren’t sure if they are at high risk and want to find out. “Elevated risk” is for people who know they are at a higher risk - from family history, dense breasts, genetic testing, or other considerations - and want help to manage and prevent cancer.

Will you tell me if I need further testing or follow-up?

Yes. If additional screening or referrals are appropriate, we’ll walk you through your options. If you want to get answers quickly with expert guidance, we offer an Elevated Risk service where we can order what you need and help you manage your risk.

Does Defiant work with my current doctor?

Yes, Defiant can work with your current primary care doctor or other specialists (such as a gynecologist) to help coordinate your care throughout the process. If you don’t have a primary care doctor, we can still help you.

Can I use insurance with Defiant?

All imaging and labs ordered by your Defiant Health clinician will be billed directly to your insurance by our partners. Defiant Health is unable to offer some services to HMO health plans. If you’re unsure whether your insurance plan is accepted, reach out to us at support@defianthealth.com.

What if I don’t have insurance?

We work with self-pay patients and can help find the most cost-effective options for imaging and follow-up care, which will be out-of-pocket and in addition to the Defiant Health fee.

How do Dana-Farber Cancer Institute and Defiant collaborate?

Dana-Farber partnered in founding Defiant because Dana-Farber believes that all patients deserve timely access to expert diagnosis. Dana-Farber powers Defiant through access to best practices and clinical protocols that inform Defiant’s diagnostic process.
