I thought I was too young for that, so I put it off because I didn't feel I'd be taken seriously. Defiant was different. The plan they made was based on my risk—not some guideline that doesn’t apply.

FAQS

Answers to commonly-asked questions

What does “elevated risk” mean?

Elevated risk means your chances of developing breast cancer may be higher than average due to personal or family medical history, genetics, lifestyle or other factors. If you're not sure where you stand, we can help you figure it out.

Do you help people with dense breasts?

Yes. If you know you have dense breasts and would like a specific plan tailored to your risk, our breast specialists can help.

Is this service only for women?

No. While breast cancer is more common in women, men and nonbinary individuals can also be at risk. If you have concerns, we’re here for you.

Do I need to have symptoms to use this service?

No symptoms needed. This service is preventive, to help you manage your risk with increased clarity, guidance, and a proactive plan.

Do you help with genetic testing?

Yes. If it’s appropriate based on your risk, we’ll refer you for genetic screening and explain the results so you can take action with confidence.

How soon can I be seen?

We offer same-day or next-day virtual appointments. No waiting weeks just to get started.

Where does Defiant offer its services?

Defiant currently offers services in Massachusetts, with other locations coming soon.

Do I need a referral?

No referral is needed. You can book directly with our doctors.

What makes this different from a regular doctor’s visit?

Unlike most primary care or OB/GYN appointments, we focus only on breast health and risk. Our physicians have deep expertise and the time to provide highly individualized care for patients who are at higher risk.

Does Defiant work with my current doctor?

Yes, Defiant can work with your current primary care doctor or other specialists (such as a gynecologist) to help coordinate your care throughout the process. If you don’t have a primary care doctor, we can still help you.

What happens after I get my plan?

We’ll share your plan in writing and help you book any next steps—whether that’s imaging, genetic testing, or a follow-up consultation. We’ll then review your results with you and your current primary care doctor, if you have one. We stay with you every step of the way.

What if something concerning is found later?

We’re here for you. If new findings arise, we offer an Accelerated Diagnosis service so you can get diagnosed within days, not months.

Can I use insurance with Defiant?

All imaging and labs ordered by your Defiant Health clinician will be billed directly to your insurance by our partners.

Defiant Health is unable to offer some services to HMO health plans. If you’re unsure whether your insurance plan is accepted, reach out to us at support@defianthealth.com.

What if I don’t have insurance?

We work with self-pay patients and can help find the most cost-effective options for imaging and follow-up care, which will be out-of-pocket and in addition to the Defiant Health fee.

Can I pay for Defiant's services using FSA or HSA dollars?

Yes, the diagnostic service offered by Defiant Health is considered an eligible medical expense that can be paid for using FSA and HSA dollars.

Is imaging or testing included in the $199?

No. Imaging and testing are billed separately, usually through your insurance. We work with your providers to make sure you’re only getting what’s needed—and that it's as seamless as possible.

How do Dana-Farber Cancer Institute and Defiant collaborate?

Dana-Farber partnered in founding Defiant because Dana-Farber believes that all patients deserve timely access to expert diagnosis. Dana-Farber powers Defiant through access to best practices and clinical protocols that inform Defiant’s diagnostic process.
